x-ray images

The x-ray images of the altar were taken at the Ferdinandeum in cooperation with Thomas Becker, a radiography expert for art and cultural heritage from Küsnacht. The aim was to understand the construction of the wooden shrine, the placement of the iron straps for fastening the altar wings and the kind of assembling and woodwork techniques that were applied to manufacture the altar. It turned out that the altar of Tyrol Castle consists of a very simple nailed crate without constructional wood connections. Subsequently, these results shall be compared with the construction principles of comparable altar shrines.
